Als er bei einem Autounfall ums Leben kommt, gerät die heile Welt seiner Familie völlig aus den Fugen. Zunächst scheint es, als würde die Tragödie die Familie auseinander brechen lassen. Vor allem die Eltern Maryanne (Andie MacDowell) und Steven (Aidan Quinn) entfremden sich zunehmend voneinander. Denn jeder hat seinen eigenen Weg, mit der Trauer um Luke umzugehen. Und keiner scheint dem anderen helfen zu können. Doch als der mittlere Sohn Jon (Ryan Merriman) beschließt, seine nächste Saison als College-Footballer dem Gedenken an Luke zu widmen, verändert sich allmählich alles.
