Sein Vater wird fortwährend vom rechtsradikalen Ku-Klux-Klan terrorisiert und schließlich ermordet. Daraufhin wird Malcoms Mutter in eine Nervenheilanstalt eingewiesen werden muss und die Kinder auf Pflegefamilen verteilt. Malcolm ist ein ehrgeiziger Schüler, doch muss er bald lernen, dass in den USA in der ersten Hälfte des 20. Jahrhunderts Afroamerikaner nicht die gleichen Bildungs- und Arbeitschancen haben wie die Weißen. Er gerät in die falschen Kreise und auf die schiefe Bahn, wird schließlich verhaftet und muss ins Gefängnis. Dort lernt er den schwarzen Mithäftling und Muslim Baines kennen, der ihn nach den Richtlinien der "Nation of Islam", einer Vereinigung von schwarzen Muslimen in den USA unterrichtet. Wieder auf freiem Fuss legt er seinen Sklavennamen Little ab und nennt sich nun Malcolm X. Er wird Anführer einer neuen Bewegung für Freiheit und Gerechtigkeit, doch seine Feinde trachten ihm nach dem Leben und so wird er bei einer öffentlichen Kundgebung vor den Augen seiner Frau und seiner Kinder gleich von mehreren Attentätern ermordet.
