Hausfrau Rachel Mallory wird erhängt aufgefunden. Obwohl zunächst alles auf Suizid hindeutet, will Inspektor Lewis nicht so recht an eine solche Theorie glauben. Und tatsächlich, sein Verdacht scheint sich zu bestätigen: Die Gerichtsmedizin findet Hinweise darauf, dass Rachel ganz und gar nicht freiwillig aus dem Leben geschieden ist. Die Suche nach dem Täter gestaltet sich jedoch schwierig, zumal keinerlei Motiv zu erkennen ist. Inspektor Lewis tappt vorerst im Dunkeln - bis er von unerwarteter Seite Hilfe bekommt: Der todkranke Professor Le Plassiter behauptet, Täter und Motiv zu kennen.
