Sarah (Jennifer Connelly) will nicht ihren kleinen Bruder Toby hüten. Lieber möchte die Teenagerin sich in ihrer Fantasiewelt verlieren - und wünscht Toby zu den Kobolden. Als dann wirklich Koboldkönig Jareth (David Bowie) auftaucht und den Kleinen mitnimmt, hat Sarah nur noch 13 Stunden! Entweder sie überwindet ein gefährliches Labyrinth oder Toby wird für immer zum Kobold. Parallel zum Film erschien das Adventure-Computerspiel "Labyrinth", das erste von Lucasfilm Games entwickelte Grafik-Adventure. 2020 berichteten verschiedene Medien von einer geplanten Fortsetzung: "Doctor Strange"-Regisseur Scott Derrickson soll bereits an dem Sequel arbeiten.
