The composer, conductor, cellist, and classical guitarist was born in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, in 1887. Growing up during a time of immense social change in Brazil - with the abolishment of slavery in 1888, this was a time of social revolution and far-reaching modernizations - Villa-Lobos went on to become one of South America's best-known composers of all time.
